The Spirit of the Foundation
Tomakomai Komazawa University is founded on the philosophy of Zen Buddhism. Our education does not aim merely to confer plenty of knowledge and information on students but to develop their fine character.
To achieve this goal, we provide, among the wide range of courses in our curriculum, practical teaching on Buddhist wisdom.
Following the doctrine of “the Fusion of Study and Practice” and “Trust, Sincerity, Respect, and Love,” we try to foster people who can both understand the variety of cultures in the world and contribute to the welfare of communities they live in.
The Fusion of Study and Practice
The fundamental philosophy of Tomakomai Komazawa University is expressed in "GYOU-GAKU-ICHI-NYO”, that is, “oneness of study and practice”. "GYOU” and "GAKU” refer to practice and study, respectively. Human development through the unity of study and practice is the basic principle of our education.
Trust, Sincerity, Respect, and Love
"The Fusion of Study and Practice” is embodied in SHIN-SEI-KEI-AI (trust, sincerity, respect, and love). The first two express honesty to oneself, while the second two signify the proper relation to the lives of others. These four concepts convey Mahayana Buddhist teaching of wish for well-being of oneself and others.
